Antigon
is a new medication that will allow IVF doctors to utilize
IVF stimulation protocols without requiring the use of Lupron.
Like Lupron, Antigon blocks the Luteinizing Hormone surge
that, if occurring prematurely, will jeopardize a successful
egg retrieval by causing premature release of the eggs from
the follicles. Consequently Gonadotropin stimulation can be
successfully employed for IVF without the fear of losing eggs
prior to the retrieval. When the follicles reach 14 mm Antigon
is given along with the usual Gonadotropin dosage. This usually
requires three to four injections until the eggs are mature
enough for HCG injection.
Antigon
is also useful in cases in which natural cycle IVF is employed.
Although natural cycle IVF is not as successful in achieving
pregnancy as IVF with ovarian stimulation, in certain cases,
it may be an appropriate choice of protocol. Using Antigon,
the single egg follicle can be allowed to mature without risking
egg release prior to retrieval. In patients who are too profoundly
suppressed by Lupron, Antigon will allow ovarian stimulation
using Gonadotropins or Clomid alone. The role of Antigon in
IVF protocols will soon be established because it will allow
physicians to customize IVF stimulation protocols to suit
individuals who do not respond well to the established medication
regimens.
