If
a Cycle is Not Successful
The
majority of embryos are not genetically suitable to become
healthy babies. Approximately 3 out of 4 embryos will not
survive the period of early implantation long enough to become
viable pregnancies. Therefore, it is important for patients
not to become too discouraged if an IVF cycle fails. Our patients
are encouraged to make an appointment for a consultation to
discuss the outcome of their cycles.
In
patients who respond well to ovarian stimulation and produce
good quality embryos, we recommend persistence because it
may just take more embryos transferred to create a pregnancy.
Remember that most eggs and embryos, no matter how perfect
they look, are genetically imperfect. For this reason, nature
does not allow them to proceed to the point of conception.
If an embryo transfer does not result in pregnancy, we recommend
that patients take at least one month off between IVF cycles
in order to regain physical and emotional strength and to
allow a better response to the medication. If, however, it
is found that there is an oocyte problem, further IVF attempts
will not be successful. For these patients, the option of
undergoing IVF using donor oocytes is available.
