The IVF Procedure

After the Procedure
After the aspiration of the follicles, which rarely takes more than ten minutes, the patient will be wheeled into the recovery room. She usually recovers from the procedure in 1 - 2 hours, at which time she will be fully ambulatory and able to leave the office for a bite to eat prior to post-retrieval examination and counseling. Some patients take longer than others to recover. However, patients will not be discharged from the recovery room until they are fully ambulatory.

The patient may experience some cramps, dizziness, and/or vaginal staining after the procedure. These symptoms have usually subsided by the time the patient is ready to leave the recovery room.

The patient should not operate an automobile for 24 hours after the intravenous medications have been given.

Post-Procedure Medications
After the retrieval, natural progesterone is administered. Depending upon the patient's situation the progesterone may be administered via vaginal suppositories, injection or occasionally, oral capsules.

Although they are rare, potential complications of retrieval include infection or internal bleeding. Any patient experiencing either severe pain or a fever greater than 101º should call A.F.S. at our 24 hour phone number: (212) 369-8700.
