Some
women are found to be incapable of producing viable eggs.
These patients may elect to undergo IVF using eggs donated
by another woman. The donor may either be selected anonymously
from the A.F.S. donor file or be a friend or family member
of the infertile couple.
An
egg donor follows the same protocol for medication and oocyte
retrieval as all IVF patients. At the same time, the patient
receives medication to cause her hormone levels to approximate
those of a natural cycle and to mimic those of the donor.
After the retrieval, the donors eggs will be fertilized
with the husband's sperm; the resulting embryos will then
be transferred to the patient's uterus.
AFS is licensed by the New York State Department of Health
as an Egg Donation Center.
