Fertility Treatment for LGBT Couples
There are several state-of-the-art fertility treatment options for LGBT couples.
- Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) with the option of using donor sperm
- In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) with the option of using donor eggs or donor sperm
A LGBT couple can become pregnant through IUI – using either known or donor sperm. Through IUI, a woman’s egg follicle production is stimulated using oral fertility medications – or a combination of oral and injectable drugs – depending upon the patient’s needs. Multiple egg follicles are produced and monitored. When her egg follicles have reach an optimum state of maturity, an ovulation trigger medication is administered – hCG – before the scheduled insemination day. The woman’s uterine lining is prepared for implantation of an embryo through progesterone supplements.
On the day of insemination, a highly concentrated amount of sperm (known or donor) is inserted directly into her uterus. The IUI is similar to a Pap smear procedure, is performed in one of the calm and comfortable patient rooms at Advanced Fertility Services, and does not require anesthesia. After the IUI procedure, the patient is able to return to her normal daily activities.
Another commonly used fertility treatment for LGBT couples is IVF. Through IVF, a woman’s ovaries are stimulated to produce multiple egg follicles, typically through injectable fertility medication. When her egg follicles reach a preferred stage of maturity, she is administered an ovulation trigger medication – hCG – to prepare for the scheduled date of surgical retrieval of the eggs.
Retrieval of the woman’s eggs through aspiration takes place while she is under general anesthesia in the Doctor’s state-of-the-art surgical facility at Advanced Fertility Services. After retrieval, the eggs are fertilized in a laboratory setting. Fertilization of the eggs typically takes place via Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) – injecting a single sperm cell directly into an egg. Fertilization can also take place by combining the egg cells will a concentrated amount of sperm in vitro.
When the resulting embryos have reached an optimum stage of development – 3 to 5 days growing in vitro – a quality embryo is transferred to the woman’s uterus.
The IVF procedure is easily modified to accommodate the LGBT couple’s choice of using donor eggs or donor sperm.
