Artificial insemination (AI) is one of the most cost-effective treatments for infertility. Unless additional procedures are used, each cycle typically costs several hundred dollars. Many couples find this cost quite manageable, and as a result AI is an attractive first-line treatment for male infertility, and for certain forms of female infertility.
Factors Affecting Cost
There are a number of factors that affect the cost of artificial insemination. The cost may be lower or higher depending on whether the following issues:
- Vaginal vs. intrauterine insemination – Intrauterine insemination costs more per cycle than vaginal insemination, but it is much more effective, making it more cost-effective in the long run. We perform IUI in the majority of cases.
- Sperm extraction method – Most of the time, sperm is provided by masturbation. Occasionally, it may be necessary to extract the sperm directly from the testicles. Testicular sperm extraction adds a significant amount to the cost.
- Use of donor sperm – If donor sperm is used, there will be a per-specimen fee for the sperm.
- Use of fertility drugs – If drugs are used to boost female fertility prior to the AI procedure, the cost will rise.
While insurance typically covers the diagnosis of infertility, as well as certain treatments like medication, it does not necessarily cover artificial insemination or related procedures. If you are not sure about whether or not your insurance covers this fertility treatment, you should contact your insurance company directly for more information.
